Christmas tree fire safety

Christmas tree fires are rare, but when they do occur, they’re disastrous. Today, we heard that a range of pre-lit Christmas trees has been recalled, after they were reported to melt and smoke! So, here are our top Christmas tree fire safety tips.

Choosing a tree

• If you have an artificial tree – pick one that’s labelled, certified and treated with a flame-retardant • If you have a real tree – Opt for one with fresh, green needles that don’t fall off when touched Christmas Tree

Positioning your tree

• Keep your tree at least three feet away from any heat source – That’s radiators, heaters, fires, and even lights • Ensure your tree is not blocking your exit or escape route – If a tree fire occurs you need to be able to evacuate your building • If it’s a real tree, – Cut 1 – 2 inches from the base – Place it in a stand of water

Decorating your tree

• Use non-flammable decorations – Never use paper, foam or crepe decorations as they burn easily • Only use lights that have external approval – For instance, BS EN 60598 • Decorate it with three sets of lights at most – Never connect different sets of light together • Replace broken bulbs, or damaged lighting – Be sure that new bulbs are the same type and rating as the originals

Caring for your tree

• Water your tree daily (real ones only!) – This will keep it moist and prevent it from drying out • Always turn Christmas tree lights off before going to bed or leaving your house

Disposing of your tree

• If you have a real Christmas tree, you need to get rid of it as soon as it starts to dry. -Needles start dropping when your tree is drying out • A dry tree should never be left in your home, in a garage or in a garden – Check with your local council to see where you can recycle your tree photo credit: Stuck in Customs via photopin cc
